Huskies Wordmark Logo

The Northern Illinois Huskies have been proudly representing their university since the late 1890s. The school's wordmark logo has seen many changes over the years, but it continues to be a symbol of excellence for NIU and its athletes.

In 1905, just after the school was officially established as Northern Illinois State Normal School (later renamed Northern Illinois University), a new wordmark logo was unveiled featuring an abstract “N” with two sides that curved inward at each end and pointed inwards towards one another. This design remained largely unchanged until 1925 when some minor alterations were made to give it more structure and make it easier to read from afar.

In 1949, NIU introduced a slightly modified version of this classic logo which featured bold lettering in red and black colors along with thick lines on either side creating an outline around the entire mark. This iteration served as the primary visual identity for nearly four decades until 1986 when they decided to switch things up once again by introducing a more modernized look that incorporated blocky lettering set against white background instead of traditional red & black color palettes used before then.

Finally, in 2000s decade saw major redesign efforts being undertaken by designers who wanted to bring back some elements from past logos while also giving them a fresh twist to create something truly unique represent team spirit associated with the northern Illinois huskies athletics program today – resulting in the current version features sleek angular font choice accompanied star-like shape inside ‘N’ itself making sure everyone knows exactly where their loyalty lies!
