Lumberjacks Alternate Logo
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are a college athletics program in Nacogdoches, Texas. The school is part of the Southland Conference and competes in NCAA Division I sports. Since its inception, the school has used several alternate logos to represent its teams and university spirit.
The first logo was introduced in 1984 when the university adopted an interlocking "SF" design for all athletic teams to use as their primary logo on uniforms and other merchandise. This design featured two large block letters with a small axe between them, symbolizing both strength and determination while also paying homage to Stephen F. Austin's namesake - Colonel James Walker Fannin Jr., who fought during Texas' war for independence from Mexico using axes as weapons of choice against his enemies!
In 2008, Stephen F. Austin changed its primary logo once again by introducing an updated version of their previous "SF" mark featuring more modern font styles along with brighter colors such as reds, oranges, blues, greens, purples, yellows, etcetera, making it easier recognizable amongst fans, students alumni parents & friends alike! They added elements like stars around the perimeter, representing pride, patriotism, and historical values associated with the w/school motto, “Light Liberty.”
In 2010, SFA unveiled yet another new look, much bolder than before, incorporating bright yellow, green, blue & white stripes into the background surrounding traditional interlocking SF lettering at the center top portion image. It also included the phrase “StephenFAustinLumberjacks” underneath so there would be no confusion about who the team belonged to or what mascot might be (which course, lumberjack)!
Finally, the most recent redesign happened in 2015 when we decided to go an even more straightforward route, dropping any unnecessary details and keeping the basics: big blocky letters, a vibrant color scheme, plus a hint of wood grain texture to give a nod to lumberjack heritage. As a result, we now have a classic, timeless visual, solid identity that will continue to serve, thriving for years to come regardless of how many times may change the future!
