Beacons Alternate Logo
Valparaiso University is well known for its athletic excellence, and the Valparaiso Beacons are no exception. As one of the most successful teams in NCAA Division I basketball, they have been a mainstay in college sports for decades. But what many fans may not know is that their logo has had quite an interesting history over the years.
The original Valparaiso Beacon logo was designed by artist Bill Farrow and debuted during the 1959-1960 season when they were competing as an independent school before joining Division I play in 1969. The design featured a lighthouse with two beacons to represent both academic and athletic success at Valpo - something that still holds true today! It also included five stars which symbolized each of their five national championships won up until then (including four NIT titles).
In 1994, however, it was decided by university officials to update their look with a more modern version of Farrow’s classic design – this time featuring three beacons instead of two along with an updated lettering style reflecting on current trends at the time while still keeping some elements from previous iterations such as those famous stars representing past successes. This new “alternate” logo would become widely used among apparel throughout campus life but never officially adopted due to various factors including copyright issues related to using another designer's work without permission or credit given where due (Farrow passed away shortly after creating his first design).
Nonetheless, it remains popular amongst students who appreciate its unique blend between traditional values & modern aesthetics – making it one of few logos within collegiate athletics that can truly stand alone without needing any extra explanation or context about why/how it came into being!
