Thunderbirds Wordmark Logo
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds wordmark primary logo has a long and storied history in the NCAA. The original logo was created in 1991 when the school first joined Division I of the NCAA as a member of the Big Sky Conference. It featured an abstract thunderbird silhouette with lightning bolts surrounding it, set against a navy blue background. The design was meant to convey strength and power, while also representing both SUU’s geographic location near Zion National Park and its mascot—the Thunderbird—which is symbolic for many Native American tribes across North America.
In 2013, SUU updated its primary logo to reflect changes made on campus over time as well as modern trends in collegiate branding strategies; this included simplifying some elements of the original design while maintaining its core meaning: strength through unity. This new version features two bold white “S” letters intertwined together inside an oval shape that makes up most of the image; these represent both Southern Utah University (SUU) itself and each individual student within it coming together to form one powerful unit capable of achieving greatness despite any obstacle or challenge they may face along their journey towards success at university level athletics competitions such as those offered by NCAA Division I conferences like Big Sky Conference which are home to teams like SUU's own Thunderbirds!
Finally, last year saw yet another update for this iconic wordmark with subtle changes being made including slight alterations on font size/style & color palette used so that it could better match current trends seen throughout college sports logos today - making sure there's no mistaking who you're rooting for come game day! All-in-all though? No matter what era we find ourselves living through - be assured that whenever you see those classic interlocking S letters proudly displayed atop anything related directly or indirectly back toward our beloved alma mater here at Southern Utah University...you know exactly who will be flying high above all else come game day: Go T'Birds!!!
