Roos Alternate Logo
The UMKC Roos have a long and storied history of athletics, but their alternate logo history is often overlooked. The school has undergone several iterations, each with unique design elements. Today, we’re looking at some of the more memorable logos from the past few decades to understand how they evolved.
First up is the original logo used by UMKC in 1969 when it was known as the University of Missouri-Kansas City College (UMKC). It featured two interlocking “U's” above a shield containing three stars and four stripes representing Kansas City's four counties: Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Cass Counties. This classic design remains popular among fans today due to its timeless appeal!
Next on our list is another iconic version featuring an anthropomorphic Roo mascot! He wears sunglasses while holding a basketball in his right hand, all set against vibrant colors like yellow, red, and blue, giving off energy even today! This particular iteration was first introduced in 1984 for use during basketball season. Eventually, it became so beloved that it stuck around until 2005 when new branding guidelines were implemented across all sports teams at UMKC.
After this came perhaps one of the most recognizable designs yet - The Shield Logo (also called 'The Claw'). Unveiled just before the 2006 NCAA tournament run by the men's soccer team, this version features two interlocking claws inside an oval outline with 'UMKC' written beneath them. With bold lettering along a white background, it stands out visually and serves as a reminder about university pride!
Finally, there are current versions - including modernized versions of both mascots mentioned earlier, plus brand new ones such as Warrior head or Kangaroo silhouettes. Each brings something different, whether sleekness or vibrancy, ensuring everyone knows who they're rooting for no matter where the game occurs!
All these various logos have been part of the critical role played by UMKC throughout the years, helping create strong connections between students, alumni, and faculty members while reminding us why we love being Roos so much!
