Tritons Primary Logo
The UC San Diego Tritons have a long and storied history, and their primary logo is no exception. Since the university's founding in 1960, the Tritons' logo has been an integral part of its identity.
In 1965, two years after the school opened its doors to students for the first time, UC San Diego unveiled its original mascot – a triton (half-man/half-fish) – along with a new primary logo featuring three stylized waves beneath it. The design was meant to represent both UCSD’s coastal location as well as “the spirit of progress that drives our institution forward." This iconic look served as UCSD's official emblem until 1994 when it underwent some modernizing updates - most notably changing from blue & white colors to navy & gold - while still staying true to its classic roots.
Over 20 years later in 2017, another update was made which saw minor tweaks being made such as more defined lines surrounding each wave and sharper edges on all elements within the crest itself; giving UCSD’s beloved symbol even stronger visual appeal than before! And just last year (2020), yet another update occurred which included subtle changes like slightly altering font weights & sizes along with further refining existing shapes found throughout this timeless mark; making sure that everyone who views this beloved icon can feel proud knowing they are looking at something truly special representing one of California’s best universities: the University of California San Diego!
