Mustangs Wordmark Logo
For over 100 years, the Cal Poly Mustangs have proudly displayed their iconic wordmark logo. Over the decades, this beloved symbol has evolved to reflect changes in technology and design trends while remaining a steadfast representation of Mustang pride. From its humble beginnings as a simple black-and-white sketch to its modern incarnation with striking colors and bold lines, let’s take a look at the history of this timeless emblem.
The original Cal Poly Mustangs wordmark was designed by university faculty member Hap Loomis in 1920 when he was asked to create an official school seal for California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). The logo featured two horses rearing up on either side of “CAL POLY” written across them in block letters. This classic version remained virtually unchanged until it was replaced by another version created by graphic designer Steve Frykholm in 1965 that incorporated more abstract shapes into the design and added color for greater visual impact.
In 1991, renowned artist Michael Schwab updated Frykholm's work with his own interpretation featuring stylized letterforms inspired by Art Deco typefaces from early 20th-century posters combined with contemporary elements like curved edges instead of sharp angles or straight lines used previously - giving us what is now recognized as today's official mascot logo! With vibrant reds and blues set against white backgrounds – all framed within an oval border – Schwab successfully captured both tradition & modernity without compromising any sense of identity or spirit associated with being part Mustang!
Today, Cal Poly’s wordmark remains one of college sports' most recognizable logos - having stood strong through technological advances & changing times alike; embodying strength & resilience just like those who wear it proudly: our very own mustang nation!
