Blue Devils Primary Logo
The Duke Blue Devils have a long and storied history in collegiate athletics, and the primary logo has been an integral part of that story. The original Duke Blue Devils logo was designed by then-director of athletics Eddie Cameron in 1938. It featured a devil’s head with horns, wings, and fire coming out of its mouth, along with the words “Duke University Athletics” surrounding it. This design remained unchanged for several decades until 1972, when it was changed to reflect the school colors more accurately.
In 1992, another update to the logo occurred as designer Bill Brill created a version featuring two interlocking D's inside of an oval shape surrounded by flames on either side; this is now known as "the modern classic" or "classic blue." This new design incorporated traditional elements from both previous logos while also introducing some unique aspects, such as adding white outlines around all lettering to make them stand out better against their dark background coloration. In recent years, minor adjustments have been made, but overall, this remains largely unchanged since its introduction over 25 years ago.
Today, despite some modifications throughout its lifetime, the current incarnation still retains much of what made up those early designs. From looking at any piece of merchandise carrying these iconic symbols, one can see that they are still recognizable after all these years. The Duke Blue Devil Primary Logo has become synonymous with excellence within college sports, making it one of the most iconic logos in NCAA today!
