The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars have a proud history of excellence in NCAA Division I athletics. As the school’s mascot, the cougar has been an integral part of SIUE’s identity since its inception in 1957. In 1968, when SIU Edwardsville first joined the NCAA Division I competition as an independent member institution, it adopted its first official wordmark logo featuring “SIU EDWARDSVILLE COUGARS" written in bold letters with two horizontal lines above and below them for emphasis. This classic design was used until 1985 when it was replaced by another version that featured more stylized lettering along with two interlocking S shapes on either side representing unity between students and alumni alike.

By 1998 however, university officials decided to update their branding once again by introducing what is now known as their current wordmark logo; featuring "SIUE COUGARS" written out using block-style lettering accompanied by three-star designs underneath for added flair (which also represents each year that the school had competed up until then). This modernized mark quickly became synonymous with success thanks to numerous championship titles won during this era including men's basketball tournament championships in 2002 & 2003 plus women's soccer regular season titles from 2005-2008 among other accolades!
