Flyers Wordmark Logo
The Dayton Flyers have a long and storied history, stretching back to the early 1900s. From humble beginnings as an independent college basketball team in 1903, the Flyers have grown into one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division I basketball. As such, their wordmark logo has become an iconic part of their identity over time.
The original Dayton Flyers logo was designed by former student-athlete Harold Wampler and featured two large letters “D” and “F” with wings on either side that symbolized flight – a nod to both aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright who hailed from nearby Dayton as well as the University's nickname "the Flyer". This design remained largely unchanged for nearly 80 years until 1983 when it was modernized slightly with more stylistic lettering featuring sharp angles rather than curves seen in earlier versions.
In 2001, yet another redesign took place which saw many changes including a larger font size for better visibility along with simplified wings on either side of the lettering which was now colored blue instead of red like before - this version is still used today though minor tweaks are made periodically such as adding outlines around each letter or changing colors slightly depending on context or usage type (i.e., primary vs secondary). The current wordmark also features three stars above it representing past national championships won by teams associated with UD: men's basketball (1967), women's volleyball (2003), and men's soccer (2010).
Overall then, while there may be some subtle differences between various incarnations over time; one thing remains clear: no matter what form they take – whether classic or modern - these logos always represent something special about UD athletics!
