Highlanders Primary Logo
The UC Riverside Highlanders have a long and proud history, dating back to 1954 when the school was first established. From its inception, the University has been represented by a variety of logos that reflect its unique identity as an institution of higher learning in Southern California. One logo, in particular, stands out: The Primary Logo.
In 2003, UC Riverside unveiled its new primary logo – an intimidating yet fierce Highlander warrior with a sword in hand standing atop a shield bearing the initials “UCR” for the University of California at Riverside. This symbolizes strength and courage while also conveying UCR’s commitment to excellence through education and research.
The design is based on traditional Scottish heraldry which reflects both UCR's origins as well as its modern-day mission to provide students with quality educational opportunities from all backgrounds regardless of race or ethnicity. It also serves as an homage to Scotland's rich culture and heritage which are celebrated annually during Tartan Week at UCR each April (a weeklong celebration featuring Highland Games). In addition, it is meant to represent how far we've come since our founding over 60 years ago; showing that despite any obstacles we may face along our journey together - whether they be physical or mental - nothing can stand between us and success if we remain steadfastly committed to achieving our goals!
Since then, the Primary Logo has become synonymous with UC Riverside Athletics, appearing on everything from uniforms, merchandise items, banners & signage around campus. So no matter where you go within Highlander Country – your eyes will always catch sight of this iconic emblem!
