Retrievers Alternate Logo
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers have a long and proud history regarding their athletic programs. From the school’s humble beginnings as an all-male commuter college in 1966, UMBC has grown into one of the premier universities in the Mid-Atlantic region. As part of that growth, UMBC has also seen its athletics program expand with teams competing in NCAA Division I sports like basketball and soccer. Along with this expansion came a need for new logos to represent each team and sport at UMBC—including an alternate logo that would be used for special occasions or commemorative merchandise items.
In recent years, UMBC's alternate logo has become more than just another branding; it is now recognized as a symbol of pride among students and alumni! The current design features two retrievers facing off against each other atop an “M” shield—a nod to both the university mascot (the retriever) and its home state (Maryland). This iconic image was first introduced in 2003 after being designed by former student Matthew Hesterberg, who won a contest by then Athletic Director Charles Brown III, looking for designs from within the community!
Since then, there have been several iterations over time but always maintaining those same core elements: two retrievers facing off against each other atop an “M” shield representing both our mascot & our home state - Maryland! In addition to appearing on apparel & promotional materials throughout campus life, you can also find this logo featured prominently outside RAC Arena, where our Men's Basketball team plays their games - showing just how important this image is not only to us here at UMB but across all Retriever Nation fans around the world!.
This unique emblem serves not only as a reminder of why we love cheering on these incredible athletes every day ––but also stands as a testament to what makes us so proud to call ourselves members of Retriever Nation: loyalty, courage, strength, determination spirit, excellence!!
