Hornets Wordmark Logo
Sacramento State Hornets have a long and proud history of excellence, both on the field and in the classroom. As such, their wordmark logo has been an integral part of that success for decades. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the key moments in Sacramento State Hornets’ logo history.
The first iteration of Sacramento State's Hornet mascot was introduced in 1953 as part of its new athletic identity program. The original design featured two crossed swords with “Hornets” written across them against a yellow background—a nod to SacState's colors at that time: black and gold (yellow). This iconic symbol remained unchanged until 1989 when it underwent its first major redesign to feature more modern elements like three-dimensional shading effects and bolder lettering styles which gave it greater visibility when placed on uniforms or other merchandise items associated with SacState Athletics teams.
In 2003 another update was made to reflect changes within both campus culture as well as athletics programs; this version included sharper edges along with brighter colors including green (which had become one of SacState's official school colors) making sure that everyone would recognize who they were cheering for! Finally, after nearly 70 years since its inception—the current version debuted in 2020 featuring an updated color palette consisting primarily of blue & white tones plus subtle hints from previous iterations such as angled lines representing wings near where "Hornets" is written above/below it all creating an overall sleek yet powerful look perfect for any fan or supporter looking to show off their pride!
Overall throughout these various updates over time, there has always been one thing consistent about the Sacramento State Hornets' wordmark logo: It conveys strength & determination while also honoring tradition - something which will continue into future generations no matter what form our beloved mascot may take next!
