Mustangs Wordmark Logo

The SMU Mustangs wordmark logo is one of the most recognizable logos in college athletics. It has been a part of the university’s history since 1925 when it was first used on SMU's football helmets. Since then, it has become an integral part of the university’s identity and brand recognition. The current version features bold lettering with an “SMU” monogram beneath it in white against a red background – colors that are synonymous with Southern Methodist University and its athletic teams.

In 2010, SMU made some minor modifications to its logo to make it more modern-looking while still maintaining its classic design elements from 1925; this includes changing the font style and adding some shading effects around certain parts of each letter for emphasis. Additionally, they also changed up their color scheme by introducing gray into their palette which gave them more options when designing apparel or other merchandise featuring the iconic mustang head silhouette as well as making sure that all items were consistent across all platforms (print/web).

Today, you can find this timeless symbol adorning everything from t-shirts to hats; even buildings at various locations throughout campus proudly display large banners bearing these two simple words: “SMU Mustangs."
