Monarchs Wordmark Logo
The Old Dominion Monarchs have a long and storied history in the NCAA, dating back to their inception as an independent team in 1930. Over the years, they have gone through several iterations of wordmark logos that reflect both their school pride and unique identity.
The first logo for the Monarchs was designed by Charles Ebbets in 1938. It featured a shield with two lions on either side of it, along with text reading “Old Dominion” above it. This design would remain unchanged until 1960 when new artwork was added to give it more color and flair while still keeping its traditional look intact.
In 1970, another change came when artist John Breen redesigned the logo once again; this time giving it a bolder font style while also adding an image of King Neptune holding up three tridents behind him – representing strength and power associated with Old Dominion's athletic teams at that time period. The colors were also changed from navy blue to royal blue which is still used today!
From there, minor changes were made throughout each decade until 2008 when designer Jimbo Fisher created what we now know as “the modern ODU mark” – featuring two crossed swords overtop an interlocking OD symbol surrounded by laurel leaves (symbolizing victory). This design has been tweaked slightly over recent years but remains largely unchanged since its introduction 12 years ago!
Overall, each iteration of Old Dominion's wordmark logo has served as a representation not only for their athletics program but also for all students who proudly call themselves Monarchs - making them one of the most recognizable logos within collegiate sports today!
