Lions Wordmark Logo

For sports fans of Southeastern Louisiana University, the Lions' wordmark logo has a long and storied history. As one of the oldest university logos in NCAA Division I athletics, it is steeped in tradition and pride.

John Crain created the original design during his tenure as Director of Athletics at SLU from 1950 to 1975. The iconic “Lions” script has been used since then with minor alterations over time. In 2006, a new version was introduced, featuring an updated font style with bolder letters for a more significant impact on athletic apparel and merchandise items such as t-shirts and hats.

Over the years, several variations have been to this classic logo, including an alternate shield mark featuring two lions flanking either side of a shield featuring crossed swords behind them, along with other unique designs like those seen on football helmets or basketball jerseys. However, regardless of their form, all versions remain true to their roots: representing strength, courage, and loyalty - values embodied by both SELA's student-athletes and faculty staff alike!
