The Herd Wordmark Logo

The Marshall Thundering Herd is one of the most recognizable college football programs in the country, and their iconic wordmark logo has been a part of its identity since 1971. The original design was created by then-athletic director Joe McMullen, who wanted to create something that represented both strength and speed. He decided on a bold font with an outline of two thunderbolts flanking on either side—a symbol meant to represent power and energy.

Over the years, this classic logo has undergone some changes but still remains true to its original roots. In 1986, for instance, it was modified slightly with more stylized lines added around each letter as well as additional shading inside them; this version lasted until 1996 when it received yet another update featuring thicker lines throughout (including those surrounding each letter). Additionally, in 2002, Marshall changed out its traditional green color scheme for black & gold which is now used across all sports teams at MU today!

In 2014 however, they reverted back closer towards what had become known as “the classic” look while also adding some modern touches like shadowing behind letters or outlining certain elements such as lightning bolts - creating what we now know today not only within NCAA circles but also nationally amongst fans everywhere!
