Rebels Wordmark Logo
The Ole Miss Rebels’ wordmark logo has a long and storied history. It began in the late 1940s when the university adopted its first official mascot, Colonel Reb. The original version of Colonel Reb featured an elderly gentleman with a white beard wearing formal attire – much like what would be seen at any Southern plantation during that time period. This image was used on various items such as t-shirts, hats, and other apparel for many years until 1997 when it was retired due to its perceived connection to slavery and racism in America’s past.
In 2003, Ole Miss introduced their new wordmark logo featuring “Ole Miss Rebels” written in script font above a shield shape containing four stars representing each of Mississippi's four major universities: Mississippi State University (MSU), Jackson State University (JSU), Alcorn State University (ASU) and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). The colors were also changed from black lettering on a white background to navy blue lettering against an Oxford grey background - similar to those found on traditional Confederate flags - which further solidified this design's association with southern heritage while still being respectful towards all people regardless of race or ethnicity.
Today, the Ole Miss Rebels' wordmark is one that is recognized around the world by fans both young and old alike who proudly display it whenever they show support for their beloved team! From shirts worn around campus or out at games cheering them onto victory; these logos have become synonymous with not only Rebel pride but also partaking in some good ol' fashioned southern hospitality!
