Greyhounds Primary Logo

The Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds have a long and storied history in college athletics, dating back to their first season of NCAA Division I competition in the 1920s. From humble beginnings as a small Catholic school with limited resources, the Greyhounds have grown into one of the top programs in men’s lacrosse and basketball. And through it all, they’ve maintained an iconic visual identity that has become synonymous with excellence on and off the field.

At its core is their primary logo: two greyhound heads facing each other inside a shield shape outlined by stars. This design was created by Loyola College alumnus John Rombach during his time at The Baltimore Sun newspaper; he drew inspiration from images found on old postcards depicting greyhound racing tracks around Maryland during that era (the 1920s). It was officially adopted by Loyola College as its athletic logo shortly after World War II when it began competing against bigger schools like Johns Hopkins University for intercollegiate sports competitions—and hasn't changed much since then!

Today, this classic symbol is still proudly displayed on everything from team jerseys to hats & sweatshirts—a testament to how timelessly powerful imagery can be when used correctly! As we move forward into another exciting year for our beloved Greyhounds program, let us remember this iconic logo which has been part of our story since day one & continues to represent excellence today just like it did over 90 years ago!
