The America East Conference is one of the most iconic and long-standing collegiate sports conferences in the United States. For decades, teams across New England have competed for conference titles in men's and women's basketball, soccer, lacrosse, cross country, and more. Throughout its history, the America East Conference has had several primary logos to represent it on merchandise and marketing materials.
The first logo was introduced when the conference was founded as an alliance between five universities: Boston University (BU), University of Maine (UMaine), University of New Hampshire (UNH), Northeastern University (NU), and Hartford College for Women(HCW). This original logo featured a shield shape with each school’s initials - B U M H N C W, respectively - representing their commitment to working together to promote college athletics throughout New England. The colors used were blue & white striped background with red lettering that reflected traditional Americana imagery associated with patriotism at that time.
As new schools joined over time, such as Stony Brook in 1999 or UMBC, which joined just last year, the logo changed slightly. Still, it kept its core elements intact while additional letters representing each university within its structure were added. By 2013, however, America East decided on a complete overhaul by introducing their current “AEC” branding featuring two interlocking “E” shapes set against an orange gradient sunburst backdrop meant to symbolize unity amongst all member institutions regardless of whether they are located near coastal regions or inland locations alike.
From humble beginnings back in 1979 until now, the America East Conference continues striving towards excellence by providing equal opportunities for student-athletes to reach their goals while competing at the highest level possible under NCAA Division I regulations. Their primary logos over the years have been visual representations of this mission statement, embodying strength & ambition along the way no matter how many times things change around them.
