Tar Heels Wordmark Logo
The North Carolina Tar Heels wordmark logo has been a staple of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since its inception in 1924. The design, which features an interlocking “NC” within a shield shape, is one of the most recognizable logos in college sports and has become synonymous with excellence both on and off the field.
The origin story behind this iconic logo begins with former UNC basketball coach Everett Case who wanted to create something that would help distinguish his team from its competitors. After much deliberation, he decided upon a simple yet powerful design featuring two bold black letters – NC – intertwined inside an oval-shaped shield representing strength and protection for all those associated with UNC athletics. The university officially adopted this timeless symbol as its official wordmark in 1972 when it became part of every uniform worn by athletes competing under its banner.
Today, this classic mark continues to be used across various mediums, including apparel collections released each year and banners hanging around campus during major sporting events such as football games or NCAA tournaments held at nearby venues like Dean Dome or PNC Arena.
