Gamecocks Primary Logo
The South Carolina Gamecocks have a long and storied history when it comes to their primary logo. The first logo was adopted in 1889 and featured the head of a gamecock with its wings spread. This design has been used on various items over the years, including uniforms, hats, patches, banners, and more.
In 1954, an updated version of this original logo was introduced by then-athletic director Marvin Bass that included two crossed swords behind the gamecock's head instead of wings. This new look would become synonymous with South Carolina athletics for decades to come until 1997 when yet another update took place that removed all elements except for just the gamecock's head itself - which is still used today as their primary logo.
Throughout its many iterations over time one thing remains true: The iconic image of a proud fighting cock has been proudly displayed since 1889 as an unmistakable symbol representing South Carolina athletics - making it one of college sports' longest-standing logos in existence!
