Mustangs Alternate Logo
The SMU Mustangs have a long and proud history that dates back to 1911. The school's mascot, the Mustang, has been an iconic symbol of strength and resilience for nearly a century. While the traditional logo of the running horse is still widely recognized today, SMU has also had several alternate logos over time. These designs reflect different eras in school history as well as changes in style preferences among students and alumni alike.
One particularly interesting example is from 1965 when SMU changed its logo to feature two horses instead of one with "SM U" written between them - representing both Southern Methodist University’s initials and acronym at once! This unique design was only used for a few years before being replaced by another version featuring three horses running together which became popular throughout the 1970s into the early 1980s until it eventually gave way to yet another iteration featuring just one horse again but this time facing forward with “MUSTANGS” underneath it rather than “SM U” like before (which remains today).
Though some may not know about these various versions of their beloved team's logo, they all hold significant meaning within each era they were featured during - making them important pieces of mustang lore that will always be remembered fondly by those who experienced them firsthand or simply appreciate what makes up such an iconic part our university culture here at Southern Methodist University!
