Black Knights Primary Logo
The Army Black Knights have a long and storied history, and their primary logo has been part of that story for decades. The iconic black-and-gold shield with the bold "A" in the center is instantly recognizable to sports fans around the world, but how did it come to be?
It all began in 1984 when then-athletic director Bob Beretta commissioned designer Michael Gorman to create a new logo for Army athletics. After months of research into military symbolism, Gorman developed what would become known as “the A” — an interlocking letterform made up of two crossed swords flanked by wings on either side. This design was meant to represent strength and courage while also paying homage to Army's rich heritage.
Since its introduction more than three decades ago, this classic symbol has gone through several variations over time but remains largely unchanged from its original form today. In 2005, some minor adjustments were made such as adding gray shading behind the letters and making them slightly larger than before — changes which only served further emphasize its timelessness throughout generations of alumni who proudly wear it on apparel or display it at sporting events across campus year after year!
In addition to being featured prominently on uniforms worn by athletes competing in NCAA Division I sports like football or basketball games hosted at West Point Military Academy (home-field advantage!), this beloved emblem can also be found adorning everything from hats & t-shirts sold through official outlets like Fanatics™️ Incorporated - Official Outfitter Of The United States Military Academy Athletics Department! It's no wonder why so many people are proud supporters not just because they're affiliated with the school itself but because they recognize what those colors mean: loyalty & honor above all else!
