The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference composed of teams from the southeastern United States. The conference was founded in 1983 and has grown to include 11 member schools. Over the years, these schools have developed alternate logos to represent their teams, showcasing the rich history and evolution of the conference.
One of the earliest alternate logos in the Big South Conference was created by the University of North Carolina at Asheville. In 1984, the school introduced a logo featuring a bulldog with a fierce expression and a basketball in its mouth. This logo became synonymous with the UNC Asheville Bulldogs and has remained a fan favorite for over three decades. Other schools, such as High Point University, also adopted alternate logos during the conference's early years. These logos featured bold and dynamic designs, reflecting the competitive nature of the Big South Conference.
As the Big South Conference grew and gained national recognition, member schools began to update their alternate logos to reflect their identities and values better. In 2004, Winthrop University unveiled a new alternate logo featuring a soaring eagle, symbolizing the strength and determination of the Winthrop Eagles. Similarly, Gardner-Webb University introduced a new alternate logo in 2014, featuring a fierce bulldog with a determined expression, representing the school's competitive spirit and determination to succeed. These alternate logos showcase the evolution of the Big South Conference and serve as symbols of pride and unity for their respective schools and fan bases.
