Governors Primary Logo
The Austin Peay Governors have a long and proud history, and their primary logo is no exception. For more than 80 years, the iconic Governor’s head has been an integral part of the school’s identity.
In 1936, shortly after Austin Peay Normal School was renamed to honor former Tennessee governor Austin Peay in his memory, artist Charles Daugherty created the very first version of what would become known as “The Governor” logo. This original design featured a stern-looking man with a full beard wearing colonial attire - complete with a tricorn hat - looking off into the distance as if he were surveying his domain from atop some imaginary hilltop fortress.
Over time this image evolved slightly to reflect changing times while still maintaining its core elements; for instance, in 1958 it was updated to feature a smiling face instead of one that looked so serious and forbidding! In 1975 it underwent yet another transformation when color was added so that The Governor could appear on various team uniforms in vibrant red white & blue hues – colors that are now synonymous with APSU athletics! Finally, around 2000 there were minor adjustments made such as adding shading effects or making subtle changes like rounding out corners on certain parts but overall The Governor remains largely unchanged since its debut back nearly 85 years ago…a testament not only to its timelessness but also how beloved this symbol truly is amongst fans across all generations who proudly call themselves Govs!
So next time you see The Governor representing APSU at any event or game make sure you take notice – because behind those eyes lies decades worth of rich history waiting just beneath surface level for anyone willing enough to look deep enough into them…and maybe even find something special about themselves too a long the way.
