Pirates Alternate Logo
The East Carolina Pirates have a long and varied history of alternate logos. From their original logo in the late 1960s to the current design, there has been quite a bit of evolution over time. The first logo was designed by artist Robert Lipscomb and featured an old-fashioned pirate with crossed swords, which became known as "Old Pete". This symbolized the swashbuckling spirit that ECU wanted to convey through its athletics program.
In 1983, ECU decided to switch up its look again with a new mascot called PeeDee Pirate (or PD for short). This character was much more modern than Old Pete and featured an eye patch along with another traditional pirate garb like boots and bandanas. He also had his own unique ship called The Black Pearl which could be seen on t-shirts or flags at games during this period.
Over time, these two characters were combined into one powerful image - Captain PeeDee! This version is still used today but has gone through several changes since its creation in 1993 including color updates as well as adding additional elements such as cannons or treasure chests around him for added flair. No matter what form he takes though, Captain Peede will always remain synonymous with East Carolina University Athletics!
