Mastodons Alternate Logo
Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons fans, rejoice! The school has recently unveiled a new alternate logo to add to its official branding. This exciting addition comes with a rich history of logos used by the university over the years. Let’s look at some of these beloved designs and how they became part of Purdue Fort Wayne’s identity.
The first logo for Purdue Fort Wayne was designed in 1965 when it became an independent institution from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). It featured two crossed swords behind an image of PFW’s mascot, Tuffy the Mastodon. This design remained unchanged until 1982 when PFW changed its name from Indiana University – Purdue University at Ft. Wayne (IPFW) and adopted its current moniker: “Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons." At this time, they also updated their logo with an illustration featuring Tuffy wearing armor while holding his sword aloft in triumph, as well as adding two purple stripes on either side representing both schools that merged - IUPUI and IPFW - forming what is now known as “the mastodon family."
In 2017, Purdue decided it was time for another update; this one focused more heavily on modernizing the design while still maintaining elements from previous versions, like Tuffy's iconic pose and color scheme, which includes black & gold along with purple accents throughout each version since then. With this change came several variations made explicitly for athletics teams, such as basketball or soccer players wearing uniforms featuring different versions depending on sport type, all within the same overall theme.
