Billikens Primary Logo
The Saint Louis Billikens have been around for over a century, and their primary logo has evolved significantly since its introduction. The original logo was designed in 1911 by legendary sports artist Henry Reimann, who also created the logos of some of the most iconic teams in sports history.
Reimann’s design featured a Billiken - an elf-like creature popularized as good luck charms during that era - wearing a cap with two crossed bats behind it and holding what appears to be a baseball glove or mitt. This classic image became synonymous with Saint Louis University athletics, so much so that when people think about SLU they often times visualize this timeless iconography first.
Throughout the years there have been several variations on this theme; however, none were able to capture the essence of Reimann’s original vision quite like his work did nearly 110 years ago. In 2013 though, after studying different iterations from previous decades and consulting alumni & fans alike on what they felt best represented SLU Athletics today – designers unveiled an updated version that kept many elements from past designs intact while modernizing certain aspects such as colors & font treatments to better reflect current trends within collegiate branding circles at large.
This new look pays homage to traditional values while embracing contemporary sensibilities; something we believe will help ensure our identity remains relevant for generations yet to come! So next time you see our beloved Billikens taking part in any athletic endeavors know that their visual representation is steeped deeply within school pride & tradition but also looks forward to future successes!
