Terrapins Primary Logo
The Maryland Terrapins have been around since the late 19th century and have had a few different logos throughout their history. The primary logo has gone through several iterations, but it has always featured the iconic “Testudo” turtle. Testudo is a representation of strength, courage, and tenacity; qualities that embody what it means to be a Terrapin.
The first iteration of the logo was created in 1972 when Maryland joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). It featured an orange outline of Testudo with two white stripes running down its back and across its shell. This design remained for over 20 years until 1996 when they added more color to make it look more vibrant on uniforms or merchandise. They changed from using just white stripes to adding red outlines as well as alternating between green and yellow blocks along each side of his shell which gave him an almost shield-like appearance while still keeping true to his original form.
In 2007, they made some subtle changes by adding black shading around parts of his body as well as making minor adjustments such as changing up how wide each stripe was on either side or slightly altering where certain colors were placed within them all together creating this distinct yet familiar look we know today! While there may not be any drastic changes coming anytime soon – like those seen in other teams' logos – these small tweaks help keep this beloved symbol fresh while still paying homage to our storied past here at Maryland University College Park!
