Knights Wordmark Logo

For over a century, Bellarmine University has been an integral part of Louisville’s history and culture. As such, it is no surprise that the university has had several iterations of its wordmark logo throughout its long history. From the original bell-shaped crest to today’s modern knightly figure, each version reflects the school's growth and evolution as an institution.

The earliest known iteration was first used in 1916 when Bellarmine College opened its doors for classes in downtown Louisville. This design featured a shield with two crossed swords behind it along with the Latin phrase “In Hoc Signo Vinces” which translates to “in this sign, you will conquer." The shield also included three lions rampant on either side representing courage and strength while also reflecting upon their Catholic heritage at the time.

As times changed so did Bellarmine's logo designs; however, they all still maintained elements from previous versions like incorporating lions or some form of heraldry into their logos until 1994 when they unveiled what would become one of their most iconic symbols: The Knight Logo featuring Sir William Wallace riding atop his horse brandishing his sword above him as if ready for battle - symbolizing honor & bravery that are core values both then & now at BUL!

In 2012 after much anticipation from alumni & students alike; BUL released yet another update to their wordmark logo by giving it a more contemporary look while still keeping true to many aspects found within earlier designs like adding back in those same 3 lion rampant figures seen on early shields but this time surrounding them around much larger lettering spelling out "Bellarmine" prominently across the center stage! With these updates combined together, we can see how far our beloved university has come since 1916 all thanks to small changes made over time creating something truly unique!
