Highlanders Wordmark Logo

For the students, alumni, and fans of UC Riverside Highlanders, there is a deep-rooted history in their wordmark logo. The university first adopted the Highlander mascot in 1954 when it was still known as the University of California at Riverside (UCR). Since then, the iconic symbol has been used to represent UCR's spirit and pride.

The original design featured a black silhouette of an 18th-century Scottish soldier wearing traditional garb including a kilt with a sporran belt pouch. This figure was set against an orange shield that included two crossed swords along with three stars representing UCR’s core values: scholarship excellence; service to the community; and leadership development.

Over time, various modifications have been made to keep up with changing times while also preserving its classic look—such as replacing some elements from other versions or adding new ones like ribbons or banners behind the figure—but its overall shape remains largely unchanged since 1954. In 2015 however, UCR unveiled its most recent version which features more vibrant colors than before along with updated typography for ‘Highlanders’ text above it all – giving this timeless icon fresh new life!

Today we can proudly say that our beloved Highlander logo stands strong after over 60 years - embodying not only our school spirit but also what makes us unique among other universities across America: resilience through adversity and unwavering commitment towards achieving greatness!
