Panthers Alternate Logo
The Pittsburgh Panthers alternate logo has been a part of the university’s history for many years. It is one of the most recognizable logos in college sports and has become synonymous with Pitt athletics. The logo was first introduced in 1972 when it replaced an earlier version used in 1959. Since then, it has gone through several changes to reflect Pitt’s teams' evolution and its whole identity.
The original design featured two panthers facing each other on either side of a shield with “Pittsburgh Panthers” written across it in white lettering on top and blue lettering below. This design was kept until 1996, when an updated version appeared featuring three panthers instead of two and more detailed artwork overall, including shading around each animal's face giving them more character than before. This new look also included gold accents that were not present previously, adding another layer to this iconic image.
In 2011, yet another update took place, making subtle changes such as increasing contrast between colors while keeping true to its predecessor's spirit by maintaining some aspects like font style, layout, and size. In addition, a third color - black-was incorporated into this iteration, providing further depth to what we now know today as Pittsburgh Panther's official alternate logo. The current emblem continues to serve and proudly represent the University Of Pittsburgh Athletics both locally & nationally, showcasing their prideful heritage throughout generations past & future alike!
