Friars Alternate Logo
The Providence Friars' alternate logo history dates back to the late 19th century when the school was first founded. The original design featured a shield with a cross and three stars in it, representing faith, hope, and charity. This symbol was used for many years until 1962 when it underwent its first redesign. The new logo featured an image of St Peter’s Basilica surrounded by flames on either side to represent the school's devotion to Catholic education and values.
In 1979, another redesign took place which replaced St Peter’s Basilica with an outline of Rhode Island as well as added two more stars above it that represented knowledge and truthfulness—values that were important at Providence College during this time period. In 1995 yet another change occurred where they switched out Rhode Island for a silhouette of Friar Dominic who is one of the college's founders along with other symbols like books or torches signifying learning or wisdom respectively being added around him in what would become their official alternate logo up until today
Overall throughout its history, there have been multiple changes made over time but all these logos still remain true to what makes up their identity: faith, hope charity, knowledge, truthfulness, learning & wisdom. These attributes are all essential components towards making sure students receive a quality education from Providence College while also honoring those who helped make this possible such as Friar Dominic himself.
