Lobos Primary Logo

The New Mexico Lobos have been a fixture in college sports for decades, and their iconic primary logo is one of the most recognizable symbols in NCAA athletics. The Lobos' primary logo has gone through several iterations over the years, each adding to its legacy as one of the most beloved logos among collegiate sports fans.

The original version was designed by then-athletic director Rudy Davalos back in 1968 and featured a lone Lobo howling atop an outline of New Mexico with “The University of New Mexico” written above it. This design was used until 1997 when it underwent some major changes that included replacing "University" with "New Mexico," giving more prominence to the wolf head, and changing its color scheme from blue/yellow/red to silver/black/white.

In 2003, this updated version received another makeover which saw even more changes such as removing all text except for “Lobos” at the top; enlarging both eyes on either side; making them red instead of yellow; changing some details on fur patterning around face & neck area; adding whiskers & eyebrows; and finally introducing two diagonal lines running across forehead area that are now known as lightning bolts (in reference to UNAM's nickname).

This new look has become synonymous with University pride ever since - appearing everywhere from team uniforms & merchandise items all throughout Albuquerque campus grounds - proving just how much impact this simple yet powerful symbol can have on people's lives! From professional athletes proudly displaying their loyalty during games or students proudly wearing their school colors around town – there is no denying that these small but meaningful modifications made over time have created something truly special here at UNM!
