Mastodons Primary Logo
Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons have a long and storied history, stretching back to the early days of college athletics. The iconic primary logo has been integral to this legacy since its inception in the mid-1960s. This article will explore the origins and evolution of Purdue Fort Wayne’s primary logo over time, from its initial design to present-day iterations.
The original mastodon mascot was created by artist Bob Griese in 1965 as part of a branding campaign for Indiana University–Fort Wayne (now Purdue University). It featured a white elephant with blue tusks wearing an IUFW jersey atop two crossed basketballs against a black background with “IUFW” written across it in red lettering. This design served as the school's official logo until 1997, when it was replaced by what is now known as their current mark: A stylized purple mastodon head surrounded by four stars representing each year that students had attended classes at IUFW/Purdue Fort Wayne up to that point (1965-1997).
Over time, minor changes have been made to this classic image, such as tweaking colors or adding elements like flames around its neck. Still, it remains unchanged since first being introduced more than half a century ago! In recent years, however, there has also been some experimentation with alternate logos featuring different styles or color schemes, which can be seen on various apparel items throughout campus stores today.
As one of only two universities left using mascots derived from extinct species – along with Stetson University Hatters – Purdue Fort Waynes' proud tradition continues through their beloved mastodon emblem, which stands proudly among other Big Ten schools' marks! Whether you're cheering on your team during home games or just showing off your school pride while out and about town, make sure you proudly represent PFW's unique identity!
