Beacons Primary Logo

Valparaiso University's Beacons are one of the most recognizable college teams in NCAA history. The primary logo has been a part of Valpo athletics since its inception, and it has evolved over time to become an iconic symbol for the university and its sports teams.

The original Valparaiso Beacons logo was designed in 1995 by graphic artist Don Smith, who also created logos for several other NCAA schools at the time. It featured two beacons standing atop a hill with their light shining across a star-filled sky; this image represented hope, guidance, leadership, and strength – all qualities that embody Valpo athletics today.

In 2006, athletic director Mark LaBarbera commissioned designer Jeff Johnson to create an updated version of the original design that would better represent modern-day values while still paying homage to traditional elements from previous designs; this new version incorporated more vibrant colors as well as sharper lines which gave it greater visual appeal than before. Additionally, Johnson added “Beacon” lettering beneath each beacon so viewers could easily identify what school they were looking at without having any prior knowledge about them or their mascot/logos used throughout history! This update proved successful among fans & alumni alike - providing them with something both familiar yet fresh enough not feel outdated after years had passed since first being introduced back into circulation during the mid-2000s when many changes were taking place within collegiate programs nationally (including those related specifically towards branding).

Today’s official primary logo is still based on Smith’s initial concept but now features some subtle differences such as brighter hues along with crisper details overall making sure everyone knows exactly which team they are cheering for whenever game day rolls around! With nearly 25 years behind it already - there is no doubt that this classic emblem will continue representing Valparaiso University proudly far into future generations ahead too!
