Gaels Alternate Logo

Saint Mary’s Gaels have had a long and proud history of athletic success, and their alternate logo is an important part of that story. The school's original logo featured a Gaelic cross with the words “Saint Mary’s College” around it. This design was used from 1927 until 1983 when the NCAA adopted its new branding guidelines which required all teams to use standardized logos.

In response to this change, Saint Mary's decided to create an alternate logo featuring a shield with two crossed swords on either side and three stars above it representing faith, hope, and charity - values held dear by the Catholic Church as well as by St. Mary's community at large. The school also added their initials "SMC" in white lettering along the bottom edge of the shield for further recognition purposes among fans both near and far away from campus grounds alike!

Over time this design has become synonymous with SMC athletics due in part because it has been consistently used since its introduction more than 30 years ago but also thanks largely due to its classic look that still stands out today despite being surrounded by modern designs found throughout college sports programs across America!
