The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Roos has a long and storied history, stretching back to the 1930s. From their first iteration as the Kansas City Junior College Bluejays in 1933 to their current moniker as UMKC Roos, this team has had many logos over the years. In this blog post, we will look at some of these logo changes and explore how they reflect UMKC's past and present identity.
First up is one of the oldest logos for UMKC: The original "Bluejay" logo from 1933-1937 that was used when they were known as Kansas City Junior College (KCJC). This simple yet effective design featured an outlined blue jay set against a white background with red lettering around it spelling out "KANSAS CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE." During this period, KCJC adopted its new name after merging with another school in 1934 - thus becoming what would later become known as UMKC!
Next is one of two modern variations on the classic 'Bluejay' design: The 'Roo Logo.' This version features an orange kangaroo standing upright against a black background with white lettering reading “ROOS” above it; below are three stars representing each branch of service within which students can study at UMKK – Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Administration or Health Sciences. This symbolizes not only athletic pride but also academic excellence! Finally, another variation on this theme is “UMKC Athletics,” which uses similar colors but features just two stars beneath text reading “Athletics” rather than three branches like before - making it more general purpose than the previous versions mentioned today!
All told then, whether you're looking back into history or towards what lies ahead for our beloved university sports teams, these various iterations all speak volumes about where we've come from and who we aspire to be moving forward into tomorrow's future successes together! So whether you're rooting for your favorite sport or proudly wearing your personalized gear adorned by any of these iconic designs, remember that behind every great mascot stands proud alumni ready to cheer them toward victory!
