Lobos Alternate Logo
The New Mexico Lobos have a long and storied history in college athletics, and their alternate logo is no exception. The Lobos have had several different designs over the years, each of which has its own unique story to tell. From traditional Native American-inspired imagery to contemporary designs featuring the iconic “Lobos” script logo, these logos are all part of what makes up the rich culture and identity of this beloved university team.
The first iteration of an official alternate logo for the New Mexico Lobos was introduced in 1997 as part of a larger rebranding effort by then-athletic director Rudy Davalos. This design featured a fierce wolf head with red eyes set against an orange background – similar to that found on many Southwest Native American tribal flags – along with bold lettering spelling out "LOBOS". While this particular version never made it onto any uniforms or merchandise due to copyright issues at that time, it remains one popular choice among fans today when discussing potential new looks for their favorite team's branding.
In 2011, another redesign was unveiled as part of yet another rebranding initiative from athletic director Paul Krebs; this time around featuring two versions: one more traditional take on Native American iconography (featuring a howling wolf) complete with blue and silver accents; while also introducing something completely new - an updated version based off the classic “Lobos” script seen throughout Albuquerque campus buildings since 1978 - now rendered in black atop white backgrounds instead (with yellow highlights). Both iterations were met warmly by fans who appreciated both modernizing touches while still maintaining some semblance towards honoring NMU's deep cultural roots through artful representation within sports branding identity standards set forth by NCAA guidelines at large.
Today we see yet another evolution taking place once again under current Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez who recently released his own vision for redefining what being a part of NMU Athletics stands for visually speaking via the introduction of the last year 2019/2020 season debut showcasing now three separate variations including the original 1997 Wolf Head Logo revamped into full-color spectrum palette alongside existing 2011 Black & White Script Logotype plus newly added Grey Variant Script Logotype allowing fan base even further options across apparel/merchandising opportunities alike! All three logos remain proudly displayed front center stage during home games inside University Stadium giving a nod back towards program heritage going forward into future generations come!
