Mountaineers Alternate Logo
The West Virginia Mountaineers have a long and proud history that dates back to the late 1800s. The school has had several alternate logos over the years, each one representing different aspects of its culture and heritage. From their classic mountain logo to their modern-day flying WV, these logos have become iconic symbols of West Virginia pride.
The first alternate logo was created in 1923 when they changed from being known as "West Virginia University" to simply "WVU". This new design featured a large black letter 'W' with two white stripes running through it, representing the state's rugged terrain and wild nature. The colors were also meant to represent strength—black for power and white for purity—and this is still seen today in many versions of the WVU logo used on merchandise or uniforms.
In 2009, another version was introduced featuring an orange-colored flying 'W'. It symbolizes speed as well as ambition which are both qualities associated with students at WVU striving towards excellence in academics and athletics alike! This modernized image has been embraced by fans all across Appalachia who proudly display it on t-shirts or hats whenever they cheer on their beloved Mountaineers!
