Mountaineers Wordmark Logo

The West Virginia Mountaineers wordmark logo is one of the most recognizable logos in college athletics. It has been used as a symbol for the University since its inception in 1891, and it continues to be an iconic representation of West Virginia pride today. The original design was created by former student Charles Farrar, who drew inspiration from the state's rugged mountain landscape and a strong sense of history.

The first version featured a stylized “WV” with a red star at its center surrounded by mountains and trees on either side. This design would remain largely unchanged until 1982 when it underwent some minor revisions to make it more modern looking while still keeping true to its roots. In 1996, another update was made that included adding two additional stars around the central red star; this new look became known as "the three-star logo."

Today, this classic emblem serves not only as an identifying mark for all things related to WVU but also stands proud among other collegiate logos across America as one that inspires loyalty through generations past present, and future alike!
