Leathernecks Alternate Logo

For any sports fan, the Western Illinois Leathernecks have a proud and storied history of having some of the most iconic logos in college athletics. From their traditional logo featuring a leatherneck soldier to their more modern alternate logos, these visual representations are an essential part of WIU's identity.

The first official use of an alternate logo for the Leathernecks dates back to 1998 when they unveiled their "Leatherhead" design, featuring a fierce-looking leatherneck mascot with its jaw wide open ready for battle. This unique look quickly became popular among fans and was used on merchandise such as hats, shirts, and other apparel items throughout campus stores. The school continued using this version until 2008, when they decided to switch things up by introducing two new designs: one featuring just the headgear from the original design and another incorporating both elements into one image (the headgear plus jaw).
The following year saw another change as WIU opted for a much simpler approach with just its traditional “WI” initials inside an oval shape – something that has become synonymous with Western Illinois University ever since then! In 2012 though, it seemed like all bets were off once again as they reverted to using both versions in tandem; however, this time around, it was slightly tweaked so that each had different colors associated with them (red & black or white & blue).

Ultimately though, no matter what version is being used at any given moment, you can be sure that each iteration captures what makes Western Illinois particular – prideful tradition combined with innovative spirit!
