Leathernecks Primary Logo
The Western Illinois Leathernecks have a long and storied history of athletic excellence, and their primary logo is no exception. The current version of the Leathernecks’ logo has been in use since 1985, but its roots can be traced back to the 1940s when it was first adopted as an official school emblem.
The original design featured a snarling leatherneck marine with his arm extended outward in an aggressive stance. This symbolized the strength and courage all students at Western Illinois University should strive for while representing their school on the field or court. In addition to this powerful image, two interlocking W's were included to illustrate WIU (Western Illinois University) and WWI (World War I).
Throughout its existence, there have been several variations of this classic design, including changing colors schemes from blue-and-yellow to red-and-black; however, none compare with its signature look, which continues today as one of college sports' most recognizable logos - not just within NCAA Division 1 athletics but across all levels of collegiate competition!
Despite some minor tweaks over time, such as adding shading or making slight alterations here & there - like replacing “WWI” with “WIU” - nothing compares with how iconic this logo truly is amongst fans & alumni alike who proudly wear it during games or other events supporting their beloved team! It's no wonder so many people still recognize & appreciate what makes up one excellent piece of artwork: The Western Illinois Leathernecks Primary Logo History NCAA Edition!
