Dukes Alternate Logo
The Duquesne Dukes have a long and storied history of their athletic programs, and the same can be said for their alternate logo designs. Throughout the decades, they have created unique logos that capture the spirit of this great university. From classic lettering to modern interpretations of old symbols, each design has its own story to tell about how far this program has come in its pursuit of excellence.
In recent years, Duquesne’s athletics teams began using an updated version of their original “DU” logo from when it was founded in 1878 as Pittsburgh College (now known as Duquesne University). This new look featured a bolder font with sharper angles on both sides and two stars at either end—a nod to Pennsylvania being one of only two states with five-pointed stars on its flag. The current version also includes four stripes along the bottom which represent each year since 1878 that students have been attending classes at Duquesne University.
In 2012, another alternate logo was released featuring a shield shape encircled by “Duqesune U” written out in script letters; inside is an image depicting three men wearing traditional academic gowns while holding hands around what appears to be a globe or map representing unity among all nations represented by those who attend school here today—an important message during these times where global understanding is more crucial than ever before!
In 2019 yet another variation came out: A white "D" outlined against black background accompanied by red lines above & below spelling out DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY - emphasizing the strength & power behind every student's education experience here!
Finally, last year saw yet another change - adding some color into the mix with gold accents over black background giving off a regal feel appropriate for such a prestigious institution like ours!
All these different versions demonstrate how much thought goes into creating something truly special that symbolizes our beloved university – not just any other college but one full of dynamic energy & pride no matter what era we are currently living through!

The mascot complements Duquesne's logo, the red, italicized D monogram introduced in 2019. A closer look at the mascot reveals the eyes are hypocycloids, which are also critical elements of the Pittsburgh Steelers logo where Duquesne University is located.

Duquesne partnered with Change Up for the brand design unveiled in May 2019 and included feedback from Duquesne's athletics apparel partner, Nike. Rooted in the heritage of the University and the city of Pittsburgh, the result is an angular, more aggressive D - which takes inspiration from both the Spiritan Congregation flame and the University's iconic Gothic D logo.

Duquesne is a tricky word to pronounce. The DUQ shorthand provides a lockup that helps aid the proper accentuation while also forming a visual tie back to the many bridges of Pittsburgh through the arching of the baseline.
