Panthers Primary Logo

The Pittsburgh Panthers are a college sports team that competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The team has had many logos throughout history, but the primary logo has remained relatively unchanged. The current logo features a blue and gold panther headset against a white background with “Pittsburgh” written across it in bold black letters.

The original design of the Pitt Panther mascot dates back to 1940 when former athletic director Charles Sweeny suggested adopting an animal as their official mascot after seeing some students wearing shirts with images of panthers on them during football games at Forbes Field. In 1941, two student artists were commissioned to create an illustration for use as a t-shirt design and, eventually, as part of uniforms worn by players and cheerleaders at home games. The university adopted this image officially in 1948, becoming known simply as "the Pitt Panther."

In 1977, artist Vincent Jansante was hired to update this classic look while still maintaining its core elements; he added more detail around the eyes while also making subtle adjustments, such as adding color gradients within each shape that make up his version of this iconic symbol which is now used today on all products associated with University Athletics teams including jerseys, hats, posters, etc. Despite being updated over time since then (most recently just last year), it remains one of the most recognizable mascots among universities nationwide due to its timelessness – something fans are known to love about their beloved Pittsburgh Panthers!
