Raiders Alternate Logo
The Wright State Raiders have a long and proud history of athletic success, but many fans may not be aware of the team’s alternate logo history. The Raiders have had several different logos over the years, each distinct in its own way and representing a unique era for the program.
The first alternate logo was introduced in 1998 when Wright State University changed its name from “Troy State” to “Wright State University.” This new design featured an image of two crossed swords with wings on either side and an interlocking WSU at the center. This symbolized strength, power, courage, and victory - all essential to any successful sports team!
The second alternate logo came about in 2002 as part of a rebranding effort by then-athletic director Mike Cusack Jr., who wanted to give Raider teams more identity within Division I athletics programs across Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The new design featured a shield with two crossed swords above it along with another interlocking WSU at its center - this time surrounded by stars representing excellence both on and off the field/court/etc. It also included five stars around it, signifying five OVC championships won during his tenure as Athletic Director!
In 2010, yet another redesign was unveiled featuring three bold letters: RWR – standing for Respectful Warriors Ready To Win – along with four stripes behind them, which represented unity among players & staff alike; no matter how tough times got, they always stayed together & fought through adversity together as one cohesive unit! Finally, in 2019, after much anticipation from students & alumni alike, A brand-new look was revealed featuring an updated version of those same three letters now encased inside what looks like an armadillo shell or helmet symbolizing protection against opponents while still maintaining that fierce warrior spirit within every player wearing these colors proudly out onto whatever playing surface they may find themselves upon come game day!!
No matter which iteration you prefer most, there is no denying that each has played some role in making today's Raider fans so passionate about their beloved teams here at Wright State University!!! So next time you see someone sporting any variation, make sure you take note because chances are good there's been quite a lot of thought put into why exactly these designs were chosen throughout our school's storied past!!
