Jackrabbits Alternate Logo

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits are one of the most storied teams in college sports, and their alternate logos have played an essential role in defining their identity. The Jackrabbits’ first logo was created in 1897 and featured a jackalope with a large SDSU lettering. This logo remained unchanged until 1972, when it was replaced by the familiar “Rabbit Head” design that has become synonymous with the team.

In 1996, South Dakota State unveiled its third alternate logo, featuring an angry-looking rabbit wearing a cowboy hat and sporting two crossed pistols on either side of its face. This new look quickly became popular among fans who appreciated its unique combination of toughness and humor – something missing from previous designs.

Since then, the school has continued to update its branding to keep up with changing times while still maintaining some consistency between old designs and newer ones; for instance, they kept using rabbits as part of their logos throughout all these years despite changes made to other elements such as color or font typeface used for lettering. As recently as 2020, the university launched yet another updated version featuring more modernized graphics but keeping much of what makes this design so recognizable over time: A fierce-looking rabbit head surrounded by stars representing each state within SDST's conference (Summit League).
