Mustangs Primary Logo
The SMU Mustangs are an iconic college sports team, and their primary logo has a long and interesting history. The original logo was designed by the university’s first football coach in 1915, Ray Morrison. It featured a cowboy riding a horse with the words “SMU Mustangs” written underneath it. This design remained unchanged for over fifty years until 1966 when it was changed to feature two horses galloping side-by-side with the same wording beneath them.
In 2000, SMU decided to update its primary logo once again in order to modernize its image and appeal to younger fans of college sports teams across America. The new design featured two horses running together but this time they were accompanied by flames that symbolized speed as well as strength; additionally, there were stars included which represented excellence on both academic and athletic levels at SMU University.
The current version of the mustang's primary logo is still very similar to what we saw back in 2000 however some minor changes have been made such as changing from black writing under each horse to white lettering instead, also adding additional details like four stars around each corner of the outer circle. All these small alterations have helped make this classic emblem even more recognizable within collegiate athletics today while still holding onto its traditional roots from many decades ago.
