Big Green Alternate Logo
Dartmouth College’s Big Green is one of the oldest and most iconic college sports teams in NCAA history. The team has been around since 1881, and its mascot, the Dartmouth Indian (later changed to “Big Green”), dates back even further. As with any long-standing collegiate program, there have been a few changes to the logo over time – some subtle and others more drastic. In this blog post, we will explore Dartmouth Big Green's alternate logo history throughout NCAA Division I athletics.
The first major change came in 2006 when they replaced their traditional Native American profile image with an updated version that featured a stylized green shield inspired by both their school colors as well as local tribal symbols from New England tribes such as the Wampanoag Nation of Massachusetts or Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island & Connecticut. This new design was meant to represent strength while also paying homage to indigenous cultures without perpetuating stereotypes associated with previous versions of mascot designs for other schools across America at that time period (e.g., Florida State Seminoles).
In 2017, another update was made which included minor modifications like adding yellow accents along edges/outlines plus introducing two different variations: one featuring just text reading “BigGreen" underneath it all; while the second variation had "Dartmouth" written on top instead - allowing fans more flexibility if they wanted something specific for certain occasions/events, etc.
Finally, last year saw yet another redesign where now only the primary color palette remains the same but everything else got modernized including the shape itself being slightly modified into a rounder form than before + adding small details like stars inside the circle representing each member state within Ivy League Conference (which includes 8 universities total). All these recent updates demonstrate how important it is for institutions like Dartmouth not only to keep up appearances but also to stay relevant by adapting to changing times through creative means!
